Slagtersnek is an old railway siding consisting of approximately 9 houses situated on privately owned property owned by Spoornet with a population of approximately 65 people, and lies approximately 7 km north of Cookhouse.

Existing Infrastructure

The establishment was supplied with water from overhead tanks during the operation of steam trains, but this water supply has since ceased.

Water resources

Groundwater is considered the most economical sustainable water source when compared with the cost of sourcing raw water from the nearby Great Fish River.

The offi cers’ quarters
Dating from 1830, the offi cers’ quarters – now the museum, where
you’re standing – is one of the oldest buildings in Fort Beaufort. Built
in Durban Street, it did not form part of the original fort. It has been
preserved in practically its original state.
After the wars of land dispossession, the building was converted to a
school which became the museum.
On the 4th April 1938, the Commission for the Preservation of
Natural and Historical Monuments, Relics and Antiques authorised
the handing over of the Old Fort Beaufort Secondary School property
to the Fort Beaufort Municipality at a nominal rental - for use as
museum. G.H. Lawson, mayor of Fort Beaufort and the school
principal at the time, got the museum up and running.
It now offers an overview of local culture, ranging from the area’s
military history to Xhosa art and crafts.

Die hele gebeurtenis, het oor 'n lang tydperk plaasgevind, en het begin toe 'n sekere Boer Bezuidenhout, een van sy slawe verdink het van diefstal.

As gevolg hiervan het hy besluit om die slaaf (Booi) se loon terug te hou. Booi was egter ontevrede hieroor en het vir Bezuidenhout gaan aankla by dy die landdros op Graaff-Reinet. Bezuidenhout is gedagvaar om voor die hof te verskyn op Graaff-Reinet, maar hy het geweier om te gehoorsaam. As rede het hy aangevoer dat hy nie so lank van die huis af kon bly nie, en ook dat die jig hom gepla het.

Hy is 'n tweede maal gedagvaar, maar steeds het Bezuidenhout nie gehoor gegee nie. In sy afwesigheid, is hy dan op 5 Oktober 1815, gevonnis tot 1 maand tronkstraf.

Op 16 Oktober, daag daar 'n groep Hottentotte op met 4 blanke soldate vir die inhegtenisname van Bezuidenhout. Vinnig gaan skuil hy by 'n klipskeur op die plaas. Bezuidenhout is egter noodlottig gewond deur een van die Hottentotte ...

Op die begrafnis, sweer Johannes Bezuidenhout, broer van Bezuidenhout, 'n eed dat hy sy broer se dood sal wreek.

Saam met 'n paar vriende as leiers, beplan Johannes 'n opstand teen die Kaapse regering. Op 18 November daag 'n mag bestaande uit 30 Boere en 40 Engelse soldate op, en sodoende gee die samesweerders sonder dat daar geveg was, oor.

Johannes, het ook soos sy broer, hom verset teen inhegtesname, en word noodlottig gewond.

Op 20 Januarie 1816, is 5 van die mans ter dood veroordeel. 'n 6de, Willem Krugel, is begenadig. Op 9 Maart 1816, het honderde opgedaag vir die teregstelling. Die luike is weggehaal, maar 4 van die 5 galgtoue breek... (wie s'n het nie gebreek nie?)

"This rebellion was quickly and severely suppressed by Colonel Jacob Glen Cuyler, an American in the British army, who hanged five of the rebels at Slagtersnek.

This hanging became something of a cause célèbre as four out of five of the ropes broke. Despite the popular belief that this was an act of God, Cuyler sent away for fresh rope which caused a delay of several hours before the remaining four were hung for the second time."

Daar is gesmeek vir die lewens van die 4 mans, maar die Engelse offisier het beveel dat hulle weer gehang moes word. Die Boere het dit as 'n vingerwysing van God beskou, maar die Engelse het hulle min hieraan gesteur. Die 2de maal, breek die toue nie.
Hierdie gebeurtenis sou amper 20 jaar later, as een van die oorsake vir die Groot Trek gegee word.
